After a recent clinic visit for a knee problem, my tired body craved bibimbap, a mixture of seasonal vegetables, rice and a protein of choice. The Bonjuk & Bibimbap Cafe in Yeonsu-gu Incheonjust across the road from the clinic, was the perfect place to immediately satisfy my craving.
I ordered the 12,000₩ beef bibimbap, which came with side dishes of kimchi, beans, a leafy green stem in a creamy sauce (could not identify the vegetable!), a mildly spicy bean sprout soup and an organic gochujan sauce mixed with pumpkin.
Normally the bibimbap’s I’ve tasted have uncooked lettuce and sometimes bean sprouts mixed in, but this one had cooked vegetables like carrots, zucchini etc which had a slightly oily taste as did the beef. The taste was mildly salty and good, I liked the feeling of the beef's chewable texture in my mouth, which gave my jaw a good workout.
The beans which were coated in a sticky sweet sauce were my favorite side dish. Their flavour was a great counter-balance to the meat and vegetables’ saltiness. One thing I learnt and like doing with Korean food is eating the soups and salad dishes at the same time as the main course. I used to eat these things as appetisers, but like in this case, the kimchi and bean sprout soup cut the heavy greasy feeling you have on your tongue when you eat oily food and starch (rice) at once.
I really enjoyed the beef bibimbap, as a whole but would prefer to have it for dinner, as the generous amounts of oil made me feel slightly lethargic afterwards, especially walking outside in the humid summer air. If you love bibimbap and are in the Incheon area, the Bonjuk & Bibimbap Cafe is worth a visit.
